Well if you fit into any one of these categories, then you are in luck. DVRs are much like your PC. A basic form of PC, the DVR simply records all of your movies and programs on the television onto a storage drive, which is similar to the hard drive inside your computer system. As a result, when we explore transferring information from the DVR to your computer system, all we are talking about doing is copying a file to your computer from the DVR.

In the right setting, it would be possible for us to do such things: link the DVR to our system and then just copy over the file. However, this is just not the case unless you opted for a PC DVR system, which would otherwise defeat the objective.

In order for you to copy data from the DVR to your desktop or laptop computer, you must first connect the two together via a video/audio cable, such as DVI, composite or S-Video. This process generally involves you having to buy a DVR PC capture card. Once you have purchased the cable and card, all you do is record the data from your PC while you are playing it on the DVR device. In most cases, you will be required to purchase the software for your computer in order for it to be able to capture the playing video.
